ROYAL MUSEUMS OF FINE ARTS OF BELGIUM
(Musées royaux des Beaux-Arts)
(Museums of Ancient Art / Modern Art / Magritte)

Founded two centuries ago, the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium hold some 20,000 paintings, sculptures and drawings.

There are five museums connected with the Royal Museum, and three of them (the Museum of Ancient Art; the Museum of Modern Art; and Magritte Museum), are in the main building (next to the Place Royal). The other two (the Museum Constantin Meunier and the Antoine Wiertz Museum) are located at different points in the city and are not covered here.

The Museum of Ancient Art and the Museum of Modern Art, are covered by the same ticket (5 euro) and are connected to each other. The Magritte Museum, incurs an extra entrance fee of 8 euro.

The Museum of Ancient Art houses a vast collection of paintings, sculptures and drawings from the 15th to the 18th century. Paintings from the former Southern Netherlands represent the bulk of the collection. The works are presented in chronological order in order to allow visitors to apprehend the development and evolution of the pictorial art of these regions under the Ancien Régime. The circuit starts with the precious panels of Primitive Flemish artists such as Rogier van der Weyden, Petrus Christus, Dirk Bouts, Hans Memling and Hieronymus Bosch. Finally, the 17th and 18th centuries are illustrated by the retables and sketches of Pieter-Paul Rubens, all the paintings of Jacob Jordaens and the striking portraits of Anthony van Dyck.

The Museum of Modern Art houses works of art from the end of the 18th century up to the modern period: paintings, sculptures and drawings. It represents the logical continuation of the artistic evolution which starts in the Museum of Ancient Art. The paintings and sculptures on display are arranged on a thematic and chronological basis and are spread over several floors.

The Magritte Museum houses over 150 works of Belgian surrealist artist René Magritte (1898 – 1967) . He became well known for a number of witty and thought-provoking images.

In the same building are special exhibitions, which incur extra fees.
