Most sights can be be seen on foot as they are within the historic centre, however if you intend on using public transport for a lot of sight-seeing and shopping, it may be worthwhile buying the Vienna Card. It costs around €18.50 for 3 days of unlimited travel on buses, trams, and underground within Vienna. The card also gets you discounts of around €1 or €2 at the major museums and art galleries and many attractions and shops. For a few euros less you can buy a simple 3 day pass. There are also many other passes available including 24 hours, 7 days, 1 months etc.
If you wish to buy a single ticket for the bus or tram it is best to buy at a U-Bahn stop, as it is cheaper than paying on board. Tickets are valid for all public transport - you can transfer from the underground to tram or bus without buying another ticket provided you are travelling one way uninterrupted in one zone.
All tickets, except certain passes, must be stamped at the start of its first use.
