The city park (65 square metres), which opened in 1862, was designed in the style of English gardens by the landscape painter Josef Selleny, while the plans were made by the city gardener Rudolf Siebeck.
It is a most delightful park with plenty of seating to relax.
Highlights include the gilded bronze monument of Johann Strauss II, which is one of the most known and most frequently photographed monuments in Vienna. Designed in 1921, it is framed by a marble relief made by Edmund Hellmer. The U-bahn station 'Stadtpark' is designed by Otto Wagner; and the Stadtpark Portals and other architecture over the river designed by Friedrich Ohmann and Josef Hackhofer are impressive examples of Viennese Art Nouveau.
Also in the park is the Kursalon, built to plans of Johann Garben in the 1860s. It is an opulent building in the historicist style of the Italian renaissance. A wide terrace reaching into the park is attached to it. Johann Strauss II gave his first concert here on 15 October 1868. Today, it is still used for balls, concerts, clubbings and congresses. There is also a Café-Restaurant.
