LIECHTENSTEIN MUSEUM

After a thorough renovation of the Liechtenstein Garden Palace, begun in 2001, the Liechtenstein Museum opened on 28 March 2004.

Contains parts of the private art collection of House of Liechtenstein.

The permanent exhibition features works from 14th to 18th century. There are many works by Peter Paul Rubens, including the Decius Mus Cycle; other artists featured include Anthony van Dyck, Pietro da Cortona, Valentin de Boulogne, Sebastiano Ricci...

The Hercules Hall, the largest room in the palace, is decorated with a grandiose ceiling fresco, began in 1704 by the Roman painter Andrea Pozzo.

Also of much interest is the neoclassical library, origins of this library can be traced back to the 16th century. It comprises more than 100, 000 volumes.

The Liechtenstein Garden Palace was constructed during the reign of Prince Johann Adam Andreas I of Liechtenstein (1657-1712). In 1690, work began on the Palace by the Bologna-educated architect Domenico Egidio Rossi. Rossi’s work-in-progress was taken over in 1692 by Domenico Martinelli , who had taught at the famous Accademia di San Lucca in Rome. In a move towards more of a palace-type structure, Rossi’s design for the wings was raised by one floor, leaving the Baroque building with a considerably more imposing appearance than the original concept.
