
The museum building (to plans drawn up by Gottfried Semper and Karl Freiherr von Hasenauer in the style of the Italian Renaissance) opened in 1891 at the same time as the Naturhistorisches Museum. The two museums have identical exteriors and face each other across Maria-Theresien-Platz.
The Kunsthistorisches Museums collections range from Ancient Egyptian and Greek and Roman Antiquities to the Collections of Medieval Art to the splendid Renaissance and Baroque Collections.
The Picture Gallery includes paintings by Raphael, Titian, Caravaggio, Rubens, Rembrandt.
The Egypt Collection includes the monuments of ancient South Arabia.
Collection of Greek and Roman Antiquities cover a period of history extending from Cypriot Bronze Age pottery from the 3rd millenium B.C. to Slavic finds from around the turn of the first millenium A.D.
The Coin Cabinet has some 700,000 objects from three millennia, it includes not only coins, but also paper money, medals, orders and other items. The displays in the two exhibition rooms provide the viewer with an overview of the history and development of money and medals. A third room is used for special exhibitions on a particular theme.
