The Picture Gallery at the Akademie der bildenden Kunste is Vienna’s oldest public art museum.
The permanent collection comprises 300 paintings by famous masters ranging from fourteenth- and fifteenth-century Italian panel painting to works associated with the Vienna Academy, which date from the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Highlights include paintings by Bosch, Cranach the Elder, Titian, Rubens, Van Dyck, Rembrandt, Murillo and Guardi.
The Academy of fine Arts, founded in 1692, is now housed in a neo-Renaissance building, designed in 1876 by Theophil Hansen. In 1998
the Academy of Fine Arts becomes a university though the traditional name is still retained
