
The Imperial Crypt (Kaisergruft) lies below the Kapuzinerkirche (Capuchin Church) founded in 1617. Since 1633 The Imperial Crypt has been the principal place of entombment for the Habsburg dynasty, including Maria Theresa (1717 - 1780) and her Husband Franz Stephan; Franz Joseph (1830- 1916) & his wife Elizabeth (“Sisi”) .
The bodies of over 140 aristocrats are deposited here. They include 12 Emperors and 19 Empresses and queens. The most recent entombment was empress Zita, in 1989.
