The Regency style Victoria Barracks building was constructed of Hawksbury sandstone by convicts in the 1840s. It was originally occupied by regiments of the British Army until 1870.
Victoria Barracks remains in use today by the Australian Army and is currently home to both Headquarters Land Command and Headquarters Training Command.
The Barracks are widely considered to be one of the best examples of a military barracks in the world.
The Barracks features a museum tracing Australia's military heritage, which is housed in the original District Military Prison.
Tours of the Barracks precinct take place on Thursdays at 10:00 a.m.
