The Australian Museum has extensive collections of natural science and cultural artefacts. It features collections of vertebrate and invertebrate zoology, as well as mineralogy, palaeontology, and anthropology.
The Australian Museum was established in 1827 - founded by Earl Bathurst, then the Secretary of State for the Colonies. The museum moved to several locations in Sydney, until moving into its current location. This sandstone building, designed by James Barnet, first opened to the public in 1857.
