KINGS CROSS / DARLINGHURST / PADDINGTON

Kings Cross is located approximately 2 km east of the Sydney central business district. The area is encompassed within the suburbs of Potts Point and Elizabeth Bay.

The area is infamous as being a "red-light" district, with numerous strip clubs and "girlie" bars along Darlinghurst Road. Kings Cross consists chiefly of a retail and entertainment precinct extending approximately 100 metres along both sides of Darlinghurst Road.

Landmarks include: El Alamein Fountain - war memorial; Elizabeth Bay House; Beare Park and the historic Victoria Street

DARLINGHURST

Located east of Hyde Park. Darlinghurst is a densely-populated suburb with the majority of residents living in apartments or terraced houses.

From a slum in the 1920s and a red-light prostitution district, Darlinghurst has undergone urban renewal since the 1990s and early 2000s to become a rather upmarket, cosmopolitan and diverse area.

There is a popular gay scene in Darlinghurst, and in March the Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras parade makes its way from Hyde Park down through Oxford Street, the main street that runs through several suburbs, including Darlinghurst.

Landmarks include: the Sydney Jewish Museum; Darlinghurst Gaol , which is now the East Sydney campus of the National Art School; and The Darlinghurst Court House one of Sydney's most historic buildings.

PADDINGTON

An inner-city, eastern suburb of Sydney located around 3km from Sydney central business district. Generally, it stretches from Victoria Barracks along Oxford Street to Centennial Park.

It is a bustling, cosmopolitan suburb, historically rich, and culturally vibrant with a lively street culture. It has many boutique and chain fashion stores, as well as many good cafes and fine restaurants which line the roads.

Paddington is also well known for its beautiful Victorian terrace houses, which although were slums for much of the post-World War II period, are now a highly sought-after commodity.

Landmarks include: Paddington Town Hall built in the late 1800s; Juniper Hall built by Robert Cooper, an ex-convict, in the 1820s and is the oldest house in Paddington; Victoria Barracks widely considered to be one of the best examples of a military barracks in the world; Oxford Street serving the fashion needs of a discerning middle and upper-class population; Five Ways located in the small backstreets of Paddington. On each corner there are cafes and bars, which maintains a low-key feel.
